Who we are: BEFC is a registered charity incorporated on June 27, 2001 with the objectives of raising and accumulating funds for the purposes of funding Buddhism and related courses, Buddhist studies programs, and chairs and centres for Buddhist studies in Canadian universities.
Why we are: BEFC was founded by Reverend Wu De Fa Shi of Ching Kwok Temple and Reverend Tai Sau Fa Shi of Ching Far Temple and Ms. Chris Ng. Through Ms. Ng's affiliation with the University of Toronto Buddhist Community (previously Chinese Buddhist Student Association - 1994), she met Professor A.K. Warder who initiated Buddhist studies at the U of T in the mid 1960's. U of T then had a full complement of professors teaching Buddhism and related subjects at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Many valuable translations and academic works were published during that time. For example, Professor Warder's "Indian Buddhism" was first translated into Chinese and published in China in 1984 and was republished as one of the Ten Great Works in World Buddhism in Taiwan in 1988. As a student at U of T, Ms. Ng also witnessed the drastic decline in Buddhist studies in recent years due primarily to the decline in funding to liberal arts education in universities in Ontario. The professors at U of T and other universities as well as the leaders of the Buddhist community felt the urgent need to focus community support to revitalize Buddhist studies at U of T and elsewhere. Thus, BEFC was created to be the vehicle to direct community funding to Buddhist education in Canada.
